190E 2.6 A/C issues
Hi All
Have an '88 190E 2.6, A/C never worked from the day we got it. Took it to the mech last summer, he said compressor was seized, and needed to change to R134 (he doesn't have R12, which is pretty hard to get in Canada) and no major leaks on the system. So, THIS year, I got a 2.6 compressor that has been sitting around a few years from a member on another forum. I finally have time to do stuff, so what do I need to do? 1. Should I just go ahead and replace the compressor and fittings with R134 fittings, and have the mech flush and fill? 2. Should I do some debugging to see what else could be wrong (relays, etc.) 3. Should I test the new (used) compressor first, considering it's been sitting around. How would I test it?

my opinion would be to first get a drier... then unhook everything you can and replace the o-rings... flush the system... go ahead and get an expansion valve too..
hook everything back up...pull vacuum and see if it will accept a charge and go.. i would probably first try to jump the compressor before you put the 134 in..to make sure it turns .... i have 134 in our cars....it's not perfect, but it's good for all but the hottest days.. i can't imagine any kind of issue in canada

Drier = evaporator? I'll look at how to replace the expansion valve on the manuals. To flush the system, I need to take it to a pro right? Or are pumps or whatever available for rent?

drier is a cylinder tube probably closer to drivers side headlight...it might have a small sight glass on top of it...
i think on the 190 the expansion valve is behind a cover near the center of the firewall. go to www.2phast.com. That guy is a whiz with his 190.

The expansion valve is located right below that leaf cover (near the wipers). When you take off the cover, the expansion valve is near the driver's side. You should also see the blower motor's cover. The evaporator is right behind the blower motor.
