The AC in my '87 420SEL was so cold we had to keep it low to keep from freezing--in Texas, in 95 degree weather. Suddenly, there is no cold air. This changed overnight. I took it to have the freon checked, and the mechanic told me everything would have to be replaced, all the hoses were leaking, and it would cost $3,000. I'm suspicious of all the hoses suddenly leaking. The air is just not cool. What do you suspect? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you replaced the hoses, compressor, drier, expansion valve and converted it to R134 it shouldn't be much over $1500. I would find a place that can identify the leaks and replace whats necessary till you need a compressor and then think about whether to change. Conversions work alright on that model but they don't do as good as an R12 system would.
I know many shops that only convert now. We did that for years but now only do it on certain systems we know work OK. Find a shop that will fix the leaks in R12 till the compressor is needed.

You might do a search on Good MB Shops. If you are in Austin, you might try German Auto Center, they always treat me right.
