Need help Mercedes 190 E

My electric cooling fans are not turning. I called the dealer and of course they want me to come in and do a diagnostic check. I simply wanted to know could they tell me the fuse or relay that deals with the fans. If any one out there knows specifically which relay or fuse, I could sure use your help. The car started running hot (on the gauge dial...almost to the red line). I replaced the reservoir bottle and put on a new cap. But the big thing is that the cooling fans aren't turning.

Thanks
j

I had the same problem but i could get them to come on when i turned on the a/c. They just would not come on when the temp was rising as they should. I found the problem to be the 40 amp aux fan relay in the auxillary relay box with the black cover on the drivers side in front of the main fuse box with the clear top. Hope this helps. Ron

Hi,

Welcome to the forum. I did a search on 'overheating 190e' and came up with this:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/search.php?searchid=871438

I think the aux fan on your 190e is controlled by a relay that is screwed into the thermostat housing at the front of the engine. There may be more than one, and i'm not sure which one is the aux. Once you know which plug is the aux fan, you can test it with a multimiter and measure the resistance at different temps. If the resitance doesn't match up with what it should be, the relay is junk and needs to be replaced. If the relay checks out, hook the fan up to a 12v supply and see if the fan is ok.

Hope all of this is correct...its been a while since i looked at fans.

cheers,
dan r.

Another component you can check is the fan temp switch. Unplug it and while car is idling short the plugs. One is power, the other is fan clutch, the last is aux fan. During normal operation, clutch engages at 100C adn the aux at 110C w/o the aircon.
