I just used a Uhaul tow dolly to haul a 1987 300TD. They said don't tow backwards, but I didn't want to drop the driveshaft so I did. It towed just fine. I went up to about 50 MPH. I didn't know how good the tires on the Benz were so I didn't want to push it. My trip was also only about 60 miles.

The owners manual said to put it in neutral and not tow farther than 75 miles at a speeds not to exceed 30 MPH. They also recommend disconnecting the driveshaft.

Tow it backwards, just don't tell Uhaul.
