97 S320 stuck in DRIVE/FIRST GEAR 722.6

I was just looking at a cheap S320 1997,with a 722.6 trans that is stuck in D,shifter will not go below D and car will not upshift from first gear, like is stuck all the way in 1.Will go in reverse and down to D,from park, not lower.Check engine light is on too...anybody thinks I can get by with something less then a rebuild?

pull codes on it and go from there, trans module is more than likely causing the check engine light.

Don't know if my problem is similar to your's or not. But my 320 e wouldn't start. It turns out that the clip on the gear linkage was left off. So when we stopped the car and thought we had it in park, it wasn't.. So it wouldn't start. The check engine light had been on for a while. They fixed the clip and every thing is a OK... Might want to have that checked out.

Of course it does. Since the fix can only be an educated guess, and you are considering buying the thing. It's logical to ask what the asking price is, because if it's low enough relative to market prices, then simply buy it under worse case scenario which is have the transmission rebuilt or install factory rebuilt transmission.

I had the same problem with my 1997 S320. The electronic shifter was replaced.

Only park through drive is mechanical on the .6 trans. Below "D" is electric. There is a part inside the shifter called the range recognition switch. Probably broken, or the pin that engages into the switch broke, but that pin is metal and the switch all plastic, so probably the switch, fairly common and woudl throw a check engine light through the ETC.

Instead of changing parts, scan all modules for fault codes, it might save you some money.

Even with a rebuild your looking at a 1997 S320 for 8k which is a steal. There are a lot of things that might cause this and most people get nervous whenever the repair bills start to get high. I would buy the car and drop it off at an honest independant and not tell him how much you paid for it.

BUT you may want to do a bit of research first. An owner who can't afford a $3500 repair may have skimped on other more important areas of service and repair. You may want to check the car for the other problems that the 140 suffers from. If your decision to buy is purely financial 140's can easily rack up the repair bills with little things.

stuck in first

I first scan for a error code and got P0763. book tells me that this was a valve body cellnoid. I had that replaced. The car still would not up shift from first gear. So I order a used tranny from my parts guy. I had the new used tranny put on and still have the same problems. Do you think it can be the range recognition? or something else? My problems all started after a car wash.
