Spring compressor required?

1989 300E

Did a search and found a few conflicting info. whether a spring compressor is required to change the shocks on the car. There was a link to a 190 procedure and it looks like it is necessary to use the compressor. On the 300 E, the parts house said it was not needed? If so, any special type required?

Hints and tips appreciated.

Thanks.

No, it is not required. Just be sure to place a floor jack under the lower control arm before removing the top and/or bottom bolts for the shock. You can use the floor jack to aid the removal of the old shock and installation of the new shock. However, be advised that a mistake can cost you your life if you lower the lower control arm too far (not more than an inch beyond the maximum extension of the shock) and the spring is released from the control arm/perch. If you are inexperienced or don't feel comfortable doing this, please pay an expert to do it. The labor really isn't bad for this procedure. Mark
