I think you can 8" on the front and 9" on the rear. Please verify that with a search. Here is a link so you can compare wheel and tire combinations. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html Remember that you want to stay close to the same circumference.

i just put 215-55-16's on two cars... the width..is 7.5.
you could probably go to 8's with the right offset... maybe an offset in the higher 30's the 16's have an offset of 46... i think stock on the 15's was 49 might be able to go up to 225's...why push it.. or you should be able to go 17's and change the profile to 45's... but i think the 16's are a great combination of filling the rear well, looks, and handling..
