Odd, my 86 Golf and 75 280 both had Gabriels that lasted over 30K without suffering any readily perceived degradation in ride quality. I'm not doubting you; just think your experiences are odd. I think this may be all relative and that the ride may just not be up to par for the majority of members who are used to the nicer feel of the Bilsteins. I agree that Bilsteins are the best, no doubt about it, and would gladly fork over the money if I thought it was justified on this vehicle.

Very nice car and I would've done the same if I were you.

I spent a lot of money on my old 300CD Turbodiesel. I went with Bilstein shocks, Bosch lights, and all the other fancy stuff.

Honestly... i shouldn't have.

Live and learn I suppose. My previous car (E420) got the same treatment, but the 124 was in MUCHHH better shape than my diesel.

They were gas filled. This was back a few years, and IIRC they were not called VST like these new ones I put in. They came in generic white faceless boxes, whereas the new VST I installed the other day came in slick-looking colorful new boxes.
