The alarm system of my 1986 300e seems to go off randomly. Happened twice in the past year but now it has happened twice in a week. I live in a rather tame neighborhood with a lot of nicer cars in the neighborhood to rumage through so I don't think anyone is trying to break in. It has always happened at night so maybe it's due to the cold (40's). There is some night moisture around here (fog & dew) but has yet to happen while it rains. Any suggestions of where to start trouble shooting. Many thanks!
John H

Many of the false triggering on the 1986 cars was due to a defective designed anti-tow sensor under the rear seat. Supposed to disconnect & remove this sensor!! Drivers side, round white container, 3 pin plug!! Good luck.

M.B.DOC, just to clarify. You just unplug the sensor or there is more to it? Does the same thing applies to other alarm sensors?

Di-fused the antitow sensor
Thanks MB Doc!!!!!!!
I have unplugged the anti-tow sensor. Can I replace the sensor with a later model (updated) one? If so I'll grab one next time I'm at the pick'n'pull yard. Thanks again John Hassler

John,
The anti-tow sensor was discontinued shortly after 1986, so I don't think there was ever an improved version. They just got rid of it and you may as well do the same. Barrie '86 300E |

I disconnected all the alarm-noises on my cars just to be sure that my neighborhood will not be wakened by a false alarm of my car. The alarm system will stop no one in the Netherlands from braking in the car. greetingz,

Usefulness of alarm
MBenz
Sorry to hear the Netherlands are such an outlaw area. I thought that general reigon was one of the safest and most honorable in the world. Out here in the 'burbs alarm systems do seem to make a difference. I left my sunroof slightly ajar one day when I parked in the summer sun. Came back and found my drivers door unlocked and partially open but nothing was missing, not even a music disc from the console or my sub which just rests in the rear foot well. I attributed it to the alarm going off (why else would they have fled). Thanks everyone for all your help!!!! John H

MB never up-dated the anti-tow sensor, just deleted it. They tried it again on the ML-class & many of them do the same thing. That unit is made by "Delphi"(US) & the one on the 85-86 cars was made by "Becker".

Considering an Alarm System
My wife's ML was hit in a parking lot last week and the dirty skunk just drove off. Same thing happened to our minivan last year!
I'm thinking that an alarm would have made it much more difficult for the creep to creep away unnoticed? Any recommendations on a simple and reliable aftermarket alarm for our ML320 and E500?

A client of my father had a 250D that was stolen in brought daylight while the alarm went off. The lads that stole the car were driving in a tow truck that had the same colors (and stickers) as the Dutch national automobile help. The car was standing in front of a busy terrace and there was not a single person that might have thought of the fact that this alarming car was towed by car thieves!
My C class has an alarm with remote control. I like the fact that the remote shuts all power windows and roof, it flashes with the indicators and I have a flashing led in the door panel (instead of the (un)locking pin. This seems to be enough to keep people out of the car. If the alarm would go off, there would not be a single person kind enough to see what happens. We have a lot of cars being stolen and driven to Poland and countries like that. greetingz,
