W220 Front Ball Joint Replacement How-to's 2000 S430

Wondering how hard is it to change the front ball joint on my 2000 S430 W220? Once in a while, when I turn the wheel while backing up, I hear a popping sound. Don't happen all the time, probably once every week or so...

I saw there is a ball joint removal tool made specifically for the W220... anybody know the exact procedure?

Please help!!! Thanks!

that post is for an 85 300SD... is it the same procedure on a 2000 S430 W220? I want to be able to do it on the car without taking the steering knuckle off.

From those instructions, it looks like you have to disassemble the whole knuckle arm...

Any other insight?

Just for kicks, you might want to read the following thread:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w202-c-class/1282755-what-could-noise.html

I know it references a different model but it might give you some ideas on trouble shooting before you start ripping things apart.

The procedure is basically the same for your car.

You need a proper diagnosis. The usual rules apply, jack up the car by the lower control arm and move the tire back and forth, etc.

From

Ball joint part 10 needs to be pressed in. The upper control arm, 85, would be replaced. There are various bushings and then there are the tie rod ends.

part 15.

P.S. I wish I had rack and pinion on my W126's.

Had the same problem on my W220 and it turned out to be the tie rods. Both rods can be replaced in a matter of about 1 hour plus cleanup and alignment. Very simple job.

I'd check to make sure they're bad first, do the tire wiggle test. It's a big, expensive job that you don't want to do unless it's really needed. Like someone else here said, rule out the tie rod ends and other less expensive components first.
