300ce plug wires
Have a 1990 300 ce 24 valve. Went to do plugs and wires, along with injectors, rotor and cap. the plug wires that I ordered in came in as a BREMI 13247/1 1K ohm and have straight metal plug ends. The ones that are on the car, stock I presume, are BREMI 13303/2 2 k ohm and they have red plastic 90 degree plug heads on them.
Are the ones that I received, that are 1 k ohm a direct replacement for the existing wires and how will they function with less resistance? How will that impact the performance of the car? Also what is the correct gap for the plugs? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

.032 gap
I was just going over a problem related to this. It seems, from what I've been reading, that less and less availablity on non resistor plugs. You are looking at probably getting plugs now, that are recommended for the car, which are 1K resistor plugs. Since the original plug wire ends were 2K, and your new ends are 1K, you are back to 2K so hopefully all will be OK. The original plugs were non-resistors, in case you didn't figure that. Gilly

plug wires
Thanks for the reply. I need to check the plugs that I have ordered in. They were what was in stock at one of the discount mercedes parts houses as replacement plugs for that model year, bosch 8 something. .32 gap on the plugs, correct?
Still confused slightly over the resistance. I did not know that you could get resistor plugs. What is the proper combination that I need to end up with If I use these new wires. I have read that the wires were problematic regarding insulation and heat issues. That is why I am replacing them, however, when inspecting the existing wires, they seem to be pretty new looking with no discoleration any where, or any heat issues I can see. Again. thanks for the input. Greg |

.032 Greg, not .32, BIG difference.
Let me know what the brand and number of the plug actually is, sounds like you are doing fine. Resistor plugs are the norm, NON-resistor plugs, like MB's originally came with, are odd, and sounds like manufacturers are dropping them. You need a bit of resistance, my understanding is for radio noise suppresion. If you run an ignition system without any resistance, you create lots of radio interference, both for yourself and in the immediate vicinity of the car (other peoples radios, etc). Mercedes, instead of resistor spark plugs used the resistor ends on the plug wires. I guess they felt they could more closely monitor the resistance that way, where they had little control on the spark plug manufacturing process. Gilly

300celvr, I use Bosch F8DC4 plugs in our 300CE's with the same 104 engine per the local MB dealer's Service Department recommendation ... and the engines run fine. Go to benzautoparts.com and check the pricing on Beru ignition wires with the 90 degree shielded plug connectors. As far as I know Beru were the factory-installed wires. Our 1992 300CE had them when purchased used at 27,000 miles.

I'd ask EVERYONE here to please consider buying from Mercedes Shop first, it does have an impact on this great site.

continuing plug wire saga
Again, thanks for the help, I do believe I have the bosch FD8C4 plugs that were sent as plugs for this engine, will confirm tomorrow, as I left them at work. I will see if I can return the plug wires and buy the 90 degree end ones that are presently on the car now, although the existing ones look like they are in great shape, and I did not notice any heat damage to the wires that this model is supposed to be known for.
The Gap was a typo, .032 is what I ment to type in. Used to a little wrenching when I was alot younger and racing a showroom stock Triumph GT-6 in California where I grew up. Having fun going through the suspension on this car, but having alot of difficulty arriving at wheel options for 17" rims that will work for this car. Not alot of choices. Seems to be 25-32 offset that is reccomended when I use the Eibach springs and Bilstein Sport shocks. Anybody out there with first hand experience that have done this mod.? |
