After working on removing the instrument cluster on my 98 500SL instrument cluster per the advice that was kindly giving by members of this tread, I have another question. I have the cluster half-way out after pulling on it rather hard. Is it supposed to come out straight or on am angle? Right now it is on about a 45 degree angle facing down. The rear of the cluster is touching the underside of the console. It seems to be stuck. Any answers greatly appreciated. I almost have it out but do not want to risk breaking it now. Thanks....
Moe

It should come straight out. They do fit extremely tight though.

Sounds like your speedometer cable is holding it from sliding out. If so, trace the cable where it runs under the dash and unbolt the clamp that hold the cable to the firewall. Then pull up on the cable and then push extra length up to the speedometer. This may free up the instrument panel and let it slide out. (That is assuming that model has a cable... I think some newer models have an electronic speedometer.)

The R129 has a very electronically speedometer. There are only a couple of connectors at the back of the cluster and usually the wires are just long enough to pull the cluster a little out and disconnect the connectors at the back.
