Found some metallic sludge after oil change. What is it?

I was bored while waiting for the oil to drain, so I wiped out the canister housing to pass the time. On the top of the housing, above where the threads are, I was disturbed to see gray metal sludge come off on my rag. The top, horizontal surface was the only place where there was buildup. It looked like what you would fid in a tranny pan.

It's important to note that I've been doing my own oil changes since Starmark ran out, so that's 7 oil changes in 35k miles. It's possible that I've never wiped this off before, so it could either be 35k+ miles of buildup, or it could be a new situation - I'm not sure. The car has also just developed a leak at what looks like the pan gasket - very slight leak, but a leak - and this hs happened since the last oil change. All changes have been done with M1 15w50 extended life, changed approx. every 5k, since 100k, with 0w40 used from 70-100k. All seals and gaskets were replaced under warranty at 80k. I ran a bottle of techron in my last tank, right before the oil change, and I think the last time I did that was around 110k.

Whats up?

Its just crap collected from your engine over the years. Don't worry about it.

Unless you check in another 100 miles time, and theres more

These explanations (housing) sound very plausible (likely, actually). I never leave the rubber seal out! I think my mounts are going, and even if not, vibration between the cap and the threads, causing abrasion, would explain it, especially since oil pressure would push it upward toward where I found it.

I feel better if it's from the housing. I was just extremely concerned something internal (to the motor) was wearing
