500SEL gas mileage

Can any of you 81 to 85 500sel owners tell what kind of gas mileage you get from this car? City and highway. Here's the mileage on my MB's for what it's worth. I have a 72 280sel. About 9 around town..Also have a 79 300sd and it gets 22 in town - around 27 highway.

My '83 euro 500 SEL gets nearly 20 mpg on the highway with the ACC off. Around town the mileage is closer to 14, unless I use the 1st gear start a lot!

In my 73 280 SEL 4.5, I'm seeing 12.5 MPG city driving regularly and have been getting 15.5 MPG Highway. Hope to break into the 16's on the trip to Las Vegas this Friday.

Thanks for the info. The 500 gets better mileage than I thought. I'll have to work on my 280 to see if I can improve on the mileage. Mike's getting 38% more me.

my '91 500SEL gives me about 17 mpg in town and about 24 on the long stretches, both with the climate control full cold...BBRRRRR !!

I recall getting around 15.5-16 mpg as a best highway mileage with my 1972 280SE. I forget the exact typical city mileage, but I think it was in the low teens, on 93 octane premium unleaded, mostly Amoco and Exxon. Using Mobil 1 may have helped a little bit.

My 85 euro 500Sel gets 20-23 to a gallon with the air on! and I have never been able to figure why other than the lack of poultion montors other than a cat.
