There is actually a tool, sort of like a long set of pliers, that are used to grab and pull spark plug wires at the boot.

Assuming you are talking about cylinder #4, rear on the passenger side, it's a good idea to remove the wiring harness bracket just above it. I can't remember if it's one or two allen bolts that hold it down. In any case remove the bracket and the job becomes much easier. Handle the wiring harness with care, especially if it is the original.

ok great just what i was looking for. SO i cant get any of my wires out. My harness sits on top of my injector cradle. Do i need to remove that to get my wires out?? also they run thru the power steering fluid rez. I think that is what t is. I have a 95 sl500. If i do what am i in for as far as other issues. I have done all my plugs and rotors and cap.

I have the same year SL. You do not need to remove anything except the black plastic cover on top of the plugs. Do not mess with the harness. Just get a cheap set of spark-plug wire pullers and grab hold of the red plastic piece that the plug wire goes into and give a sharp pull. When you re-istall the plugs, make sure you put dielectric grease into the spark plug boot and anti-sieze on the threads. Torque the plugs to 22 in-lbs and you all set for the next time you change them. Do a Google search for "spark plug puller".

He's already done the plugs, he's talking about removing/changing the wires. I'm not familiar with that exact model but haven't had trouble removing 119 motor wires before. Getting them back in place is another matter - ridiculous really. I'm of the opinion that one shouldn't worry about putting 119 motor back in exactly the fashion of the original factory treatment. But I'm jumping ahead - as I understand it you're just having trouble getting them out of the engine compartment. Can you provide a picture of the problem?

this is tru. and not to hijack the thread. sorry for doing so and to answer the thread. Just undo the harness connectors 2 bolts and then u can get to the 4th plug wire quite easily. I didnt have to really move my harness much, but its new thank gawd, and that wire will pop right off that plug

Yes i can not get the wires thru the tight spaces they are threaded through.

Are you working on the 97E420? I just did mine recently (also a 97E420). The 4th one is in a tight space. I just grab the coil and pull it up hard and it came out.

persistence pays off. The distributor end of teh spark plug wire "screws" off and then u can thread all the wires thru the little spaces!

WOO HOOO!! Liberated! totally liberated.

Now if I only did have to go to work! this is gonna kill me until i can now get it complete~
