Have an 88 560SEL with a driver's side sway bar mount that has pulled away from the fire-wall. I am told by the local MB dealer that this is somewhat a common problem on this particular chassis and that a patch-panel/mount is available from the factory for repair. It was explained that leaves typically blocking water drain holes in the pan between the inner and outer fire-walls causes some rust to form in the area of the mount resulting in it tearing away.
Can anyone confirm how common of a condition this may be and a source & part number for the repair panel/mount. How about any tech tips on executing a repair of this nature. It appears that the brake, steering, and fuse panel components need to be R&R'd to get to the mount. I am a pretty ambitious DIY'er ..... any tech help would be greatly appreciated before I dive in ? ..... Thanks. |

Thanks for the advice James, although contracting the local MB shop may be the easiest approach I would be missing the opportunity to advance my own knowledge in this area and spend some quality shop time with my MB.
The complexity of the mechanical work, welding equipment, and a little body-work is not a problem ..... just looking for some input from people who have some experience with this particular type of MB repair. Regards, Dave |

Well than buy the kit and rip in.after getting the kit and looking at the damage you will have a plan of attack.maybe even correct the cause of such a problem.Sorry but i have never seen a M-B wit a prob like that.sounds pretty straight foward if you have all equipment just a little time consuming maybe
P.S go to mbcoupes.com ask these guys ain't much they don't know about a 126 chassis M-B |
