outside rear view mirror----96s420

I'm trying to remove the painted plastic cover on the outside mirror of a 96-s420.Alldata and the 140 dvd show that the cover comes in three sections. That information is not correct as the cover is one piece and slides off.I'm trying to detach the cover without breaking something else inside the mirror assembly.I have the mirror in the fully retracted position, but stilll am not sure how or what to detach to remove the cover.Any help would be appreciated. tx

That info is for the 1995 model mirror..the 1996 & later use a 210 chassis part number..there is a release spring that releases with a screwdriver.

Thanks for the information.Even with your new information,i still wasn't able to find a good picture of the inside parts of the mirror. When I look into the interior of my mirror when it"s in the retracted position,i see the circular end of a single spring that is attached to a hook on the c frame of the mirror assembly. It's probably 2/3's of the way down from the top of the mirror and maybe 1" inside the housing.I would need a pair of needle nose pliers to separate the spring from the hook.Is this the spring your talking about? tx for your time and patience.
