I am trying to replace my ignition tumbler on my '89 300E, I understand the process of how to turn the key and insert the tool to pull the tumbler out. But I do not know how to remove the black cover. It is a 3/89 build with dual air bags it that makes a difference. Thanks in advance for any help.

I just had the same dilemna you're experiencing a couple of hours ago. I called a local MB mech who recommended that I unscrew the tumbler cover by hand. The cover wouldn't bulge. Its difficult obtaining leverage and a good grip thru a 3 inch opening with your hands. I removed the lower panel to gain access to the cover and used a vise grips to remove the cover turning counterclock wise. It worked. A 15-20 minutes job at most. I also made a U shape tool and tested it on the replacement tumbler to see if it depressed the tumbler's retaining spring enough prior to removing the cover.

Note : You could probably use a tool to remove the cover thru the opening without removing the lower panel. I couldn't

Thanks for the tip, I did pull the lower cover and get the "bezel" to turn but it is just spinning. Assuming that it is threaded then I guess they are stripped. I'm going to try and put some leverage behind it to get it to move. If you have any more advice, or if anyone else out there has had this problem please let me know before I get out the grinder. Thanks
