From what I understand, the Mercedes marketing mavens in the United States determined that US W126 customers wanted their cars "loaded", and most of them came with most of the options, except a few like rear sunshade, orthopedic seats, trunk fridge, trip computer, fire exstinguisher, and heavy duty seats.
It was felt that American consumers didn't feel an S class was a real Mercedes unless it had leather seats., so they all, or almost all, were ordered with leather . (Curiously, I find it practically impossible to find a '79 Cadillac coupe de ville with velour seats, when I was looking, there were ones with leather seats all over the place - you will find it true with Lincoln town cars too, so maybe there is some truth to the idea American customers feel it's not really a luxury car unless it has leather seats) Per the W126 catalogue (1991) I have, it would appear that the 1986-up U.S. spec. W126 models could be ordered with velour cloth seats, Amaretta (suede-like), or leather upholstery. Few American customers ordered anything but leather, though, so chances of finding an S class from 1986-91 with anything but leather on them is VERY scarce. But in theory they were available by special order. I think Hatteras Guy has an '87 U.S. spec. W126 with factory velour, but that one is the ONLY one besides the coupe you described that I have ever heard of that is a U.S. car with velour, so you search will be REAL hard if you want one with velour. But you can buy one with leather seats, then get a custom fitted set of real good New Zealand sheepskin seat covers, and you'll have the next best thing, cool in summer, warm in winter, and the leather underneath them will be preserved in the meantime. I bought them from the Ramshead company, in Sonoma, CA. and had them for 9 years or so, and they were expensive but have held up very well over the years.
