Check/services I should do on s600?

Sorry about another thread but I figured since its slow at work I should ask. I'm wondering what services/ things I should check on my 1992 mercedes s 600 143,000 this week.

I know Im going to take it to get an oil change( i might do it myself) I know the only thing is that you have to make sure when changing the oil filter you dont double gasket the filter by leaving the old one on there.
I cant remember what tools we used when doing mercedes ( when i worked at a oil and lube place)

what other services quick fix things should I change or check this week?

I was thinking maybe check the coolant? And a few other things, where can I find certain charts or similiar things that will tell me at certain mileage I should do x,y, and z?

Well, when you bought the car last week you mentioned it came with a passel of service records with it. Your owner's manual will probably tell the mileage/time interval needed to perform the services the car needs. It DID come with an woner's manual and maintenance booklet stamped up to date, right? If not, buy one from ebay or from the Mercedes dealer, they are not expensive.....

I dont
have a W140 but, the W126 manual says automatic fluid changes every 30,000 miles or 15,000 if heavy duty use or city driving only, brake fluid bleed and flush every couple of years, probably sunroof lube every 30,000 miles if it's never been done, (requires a special MB only lubricant), maybe new spark plugs every 30,000 miles, at least check and clean then, new air filter every 30,000 miles, coolant flush every 30,000 miles, inspect the hoses and belts,
hopefully it came with a basic metric tool kit and first aid kit, tools would be in the spare tire compartment if they are there. And they are METRIC, not like your '71 Camaro.....

Stuff like changing the ATF might best be left to the Mercedes dealer or the Independent mechanic who knows the W140 model rather than try it yourself.
Maybe replace the windshield wiper blades or inserts if they lool dry or cracked, as the rains will be coming soon.

Hopefully the brakes don't squeak and the alignment is OK.

Mann makes good oil filters for Mercedes. For coolant, official Mercedes Benz coolant is best. The air filter is going to cost a lot more than your Chevy Camaro's.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Others might have more ideas, those are mine off the top of my head.

Good luck Will

Thanks a bunch jim, the previous owner didnt get a chance to do the oil before I came to look at it so I have the oil filter in the back of the trunk.
I believe the v-12 holds about 10 qts of oil from something I read? I could be mistaken but I believe thats true.

I think I might take the car to a small little shop and have them do the basic oil change (Im going to take a look at the car and take the engine cover off) and see how difficult getting to everything on this car is.

But I know a coolant flush at a small shop is about 80 bucks if thats the same kind of service your talking about? A tranny flush is about the same I believe. Air filters probably can pick that up at kragens. I never heard about the sun roof lube but I will look into that, and I'm thinking some time soon maybe a tune up? But it looks like its under 10,000 miles but about 2 years ago since the last tune up? I will have to double check on that.

Any other suggestions are greatly recomended,.

i recently purchased a 260e..

despite some decent service records, I:

changed oil/filter

changed transmission fluid/filter

changed air filter

changed brake fluid dot 4

changed power steering fluid/.filter

flushed drained, coolant... put in Zerex.

now I have have my own baseline for fluid changes.

Cost is less than 125 bucks.

still going to do steering damper 25$....torsion bar bushings 12$, change out plugs... and possibly the fuel filter..18$

i have done this procedure on virtually every "new" car I have ever purchased.

i never do differential... i often think about it.....

You need a special filter wrench to get the filter out on that car. Your friendly local MB dealer sells them for about $30.

Lee did you do all the work urself? Cuz I dont think you could get all that done at a shop for 125 bucks.

I need a special filter wrench for the s600 oil filter>?

Also how hard is it/ tricky is it to get the engine cover off? And is there a specific recomended coolant for these cars? what about tranny fluid Im assuming dexron 3? I might get the trany and rear diff done at a shop.

By the way how and where would i get the brake fluid done?

I finally sat down and checked over my service records that the previous owner gave me. Heres what I found.

6/20/05 137,221

replace rediyator?? I think it says radiator? (488 bucks for the radiator)
and 13 bucks worth of coolant.

next

6/28/05 mileage 137,406

check engine light was on, explanation and then it says they replaced air mass meter (sensor) and cleared the fault codes.

next

12/07/05 139,387
egr holds vacuum but does not pull engine prm's down, repair and replace (r&r????) left and right throttle bodies. r&r egr tubes

also dist. cap, and rotor was replaced in 02 but at 109,000 miles
*car now has 143,000* so less then 35,000 miles
at that same time it looks like the power steering pulley was replaced??
It says $1,030 bucks for the pulley? Wow if so thats crazy.

So it looks like my last tune up was 35,000 miles ago. How often are tune ups recomended?

In my opinion.....

Well, you could probably use a tuneup, its over 30,000 miles since you had one, and you could wait a while on the coolant, if it had a new radiator and coolant, at 135, 000, and you have about 145,000 on the car now, you could proabably let it go to about 165,000 miles give or take. (But meantime be sure the thermostat, radiator cap and water hoses, are OK, along with the belts.

Read the owner's manual to get a clear owner on what fluids to use, and obey the instructions, the coolant, for example is supposed to be compatible with the radiator, if you use the wrong one, the chemicals in it could corrode the radiator in certain cases. Use Mercedes Benz coolant only, and don't be quick to put Dexron in the automatic transmission, uwse what the factory recommends, probably a certain kind of fluid is needed if the car has a limited slip differential.

The big price, to get to power steering pulley replaced, was high, everyone on Mercedesshop said the W140 600 repair cost was high, and as you can see, for repairs it really is. The 600SEL was the flagship, and top of the line for Mercedes Benz, of all its models, it cost over $100,000, so you shouldn't be surprised to find it costs more to fix than a Ford Focus.

The brake fluid flush and bleed is a fairly straightforward job, a good Mercedes Benz dealer or an independent Mercedes shop should be able to do that for you. Have the look at the power steering fluid pump, while they are at it, and top it off with Mercedes Benz recommended fluid if needed, and have hydraulic self leveling suspension checked too, to be sure it is OK

Looks like so far you have a good car, it's good that you are taking good care of it.

Owning a 12 cylinder v8 Mercedes is a very special privilege, very few people have that pleasure, I can only imagine the feeling of power and satisfaction you must get when you drive that car out on the highway. You probably will be spoiled for life.

Im trying to keep ontop of everything and do it now. I dont want to fall behind, I want to keep ontop of all the stuff I need to take care of. Im going to call the mercedes dealership and find out some prices on an oil change, transmission gasket and fluid change, rear differential and air filter. I think i might be able to get away with doing my own oil but I got to get that oil wrench. I have a 15 percent off maintanance coupon for mercedes.

And driving that car is crazy jim trust me people check me out all the time. I love it, if i could just get the damn stereo and speakers to sound right ( possibly the amp) I would be perfectly happy.

Every maintenance item on your car is done at mileage intervals, i.e. change oil every 7,500 miles, replace spark plugs every 30,000 miles, etc., except for two items which are replaced at time intervals:

1. coolant - replace every three years.

2. brake fluid - replace every two years.

the only work i don't do on my cars is front end alignments....don't have the tools....

i don't have cars with advanced electronics, however....

i doing the transmission filter....it's hard on my 50 year old body... i barely fit under the car (triple secured by 2 jack stands and a jack)

anyway...they are still about the easiest cars i have ever worked on...

If my memory serves me, because its been over two years since I have changed the oil on an M120. Standing in front of the car its on the right or left about half way back and down. Look for a smooth black plastic cap.
