Check/services I should do on s600?
Sorry about another thread but I figured since its slow at work I should ask. I'm wondering what services/ things I should check on my 1992 mercedes s 600 143,000 this week.
I know Im going to take it to get an oil change( i might do it myself) I know the only thing is that you have to make sure when changing the oil filter you dont double gasket the filter by leaving the old one on there. I cant remember what tools we used when doing mercedes ( when i worked at a oil and lube place) what other services quick fix things should I change or check this week? I was thinking maybe check the coolant? And a few other things, where can I find certain charts or similiar things that will tell me at certain mileage I should do x,y, and z? |

I dont have a W140 but, the W126 manual says automatic fluid changes every 30,000 miles or 15,000 if heavy duty use or city driving only, brake fluid bleed and flush every couple of years, probably sunroof lube every 30,000 miles if it's never been done, (requires a special MB only lubricant), maybe new spark plugs every 30,000 miles, at least check and clean then, new air filter every 30,000 miles, coolant flush every 30,000 miles, inspect the hoses and belts, hopefully it came with a basic metric tool kit and first aid kit, tools would be in the spare tire compartment if they are there. And they are METRIC, not like your '71 Camaro..... Stuff like changing the ATF might best be left to the Mercedes dealer or the Independent mechanic who knows the W140 model rather than try it yourself. Maybe replace the windshield wiper blades or inserts if they lool dry or cracked, as the rains will be coming soon. Hopefully the brakes don't squeak and the alignment is OK. Mann makes good oil filters for Mercedes. For coolant, official Mercedes Benz coolant is best. The air filter is going to cost a lot more than your Chevy Camaro's. That's all I can think of at the moment. Others might have more ideas, those are mine off the top of my head. Good luck Will

Thanks a bunch jim, the previous owner didnt get a chance to do the oil before I came to look at it so I have the oil filter in the back of the trunk.
I believe the v-12 holds about 10 qts of oil from something I read? I could be mistaken but I believe thats true. I think I might take the car to a small little shop and have them do the basic oil change (Im going to take a look at the car and take the engine cover off) and see how difficult getting to everything on this car is. But I know a coolant flush at a small shop is about 80 bucks if thats the same kind of service your talking about? A tranny flush is about the same I believe. Air filters probably can pick that up at kragens. I never heard about the sun roof lube but I will look into that, and I'm thinking some time soon maybe a tune up? But it looks like its under 10,000 miles but about 2 years ago since the last tune up? I will have to double check on that. Any other suggestions are greatly recomended,. |

i recently purchased a 260e..
despite some decent service records, I: changed oil/filter changed transmission fluid/filter changed air filter changed brake fluid dot 4 changed power steering fluid/.filter flushed drained, coolant... put in Zerex. now I have have my own baseline for fluid changes. Cost is less than 125 bucks. still going to do steering damper 25$....torsion bar bushings 12$, change out plugs... and possibly the fuel filter..18$ i have done this procedure on virtually every "new" car I have ever purchased. i never do differential... i often think about it.....

You need a special filter wrench to get the filter out on that car. Your friendly local MB dealer sells them for about $30.

Lee did you do all the work urself? Cuz I dont think you could get all that done at a shop for 125 bucks.
I need a special filter wrench for the s600 oil filter>? Also how hard is it/ tricky is it to get the engine cover off? And is there a specific recomended coolant for these cars? what about tranny fluid Im assuming dexron 3? I might get the trany and rear diff done at a shop. By the way how and where would i get the brake fluid done? |
