Need elect. gremlin help, W124 w/ 2.82 rear diff......

These symptoms may be related and may not, I'm not sure.....

Several months ago I pressed on the brake pedal and the console lights were flickering, not anymore.

When starting the car at night with the headlights on, they would dim for a split second when I begin to drive off. Alternator maybe?

The outside temp gauge stopped working several months ago.

The drivers door does not activate the dome light (relay here from what I've read).

I broke the 3rd brake light housing a month ago. Bought a replacment from the MB junk yard. Sometimes the light works, sometimes not, and the dash light will come on.

The radio will usually turn off and come right back on if I press the window 'up' buttons. The radio has begun randomly turning off and on lately. It ususally seems to happen when I take off from a stop light. I can't tell if it's related to the brake or the accelerator.

No fan on any button pushed.

Lastly, today while driving back from Home Depot I looked at the cluster and the speedo wasn't working at all. A few hours later I got in the car and everything seemed fine.

My plan is to have the alternator tested, replace the seatbelt buzzer relay and go from there. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Craig

wiring harness are a problem on the 94-95 E class cars the insulation
on the wire cracks and come's off causing all kind's of problems
you would have to cut open the harness to see this.
Good Luck

Sorry. Should have given more info.

Bought from a MB dealer in '01. They did the harness before I bought it.

BergWerks did the diff. swap so I don't know what was done as far as the speedo is concerned. The cluster was pulled while it was at the shop the other day and it's not the cleanest job I've seen. Poor splices. Someone must have a write-up on the 2.82 wiring. I think I read there's a box behind the radio to control the speedometer. Since it briefly stopped working today, I think I need to look at that.

Isn't there a tuner in LA that knows the 2.82 diff swap?

Craig

Seems like you sold the car, but did you ever get these issues sorted out, and if so, was there a single cause related to the differential swap? It seems like you had several things all going on at once.

From what I can tell, the Abbott Tech ERA only has four wires: power, ground, sensor in, and output to speedo. Hard to see how that is going to cause much problem elsewhere.

I have also been looking for a wiring writeup. Seems like a smart thing to do is wire male and female watertight plugs onto everything where the ERA is wired in, so the box can simply be removed if needed and the original wires reconnected.

Yes, I know the thread is twelve years old. This is why we have libraries - old books are sometimes the only place to read what you need.

Yes I did sell the car many years ago. For the life of me I don't remember selling the car with all of these problems. I don't remember having these problems but I wrote the post so I must have. Sorry.

FYI for anyone contemplating this swap, I ended up sending the cluster to north hollywood speedometer and having them recalibrate it. No wiring involved. Done.
