Best Light Bulbs for benz ?

Hi Folks, I know that not all things are made equal. Not even headlamp bulbs. So what are the best bulbs you can buy so as to be worry free for you? Bosch? Phillips? some other?

By the way, anyone know where in the Toronto area I can get headlamp and other bulbs for my 260E ??

Right now the front right blinker isn't blinking, only the back does when I signal a right turn. However the bulb actually is brightly lit up (brighter than the others). And that dash lamp with teh exclamation mark in the midle is lit up which is suppose to lit up only if you bulb is blown. So I must have a short circuit somewhere, or maybe the light bulb is just no good. First I need to get replacement bulbs first before I can dig into this further.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention. When I make right turn signal the one at the rear flashes really fast. The front one doesn't it just brightly lit up and stays lit up with no blinking.

in your example, when you get the fast blink on right-turn signal, are the headlamps on? If the lights are on, then probably the flasher filament is gone in that bulb (it's probably a dual-filament bulb - one for parking lights and another brigher filament for the blink). If the lights are off, then something's not right with the wiring there, because if the rear flashes, the front should too.

It may also be a corroded bulb socket.

A flasher works by using the "draw" of the circuit to heat a bi-metalic strip which is attached to a contactor in the flasher. As the strip heats up, it bends and causes the circuit to break. When the circuit breaks, the power that's causing the strip to heat is removed and the strip cools down. Once it cools sufficiently, the circuit re-connects and the process starts all over again.

When a bulb is burnt out or not receiving electricity, the amp draw of the circuit isn't as high, so the element doesn't get as hot as quickly, therefore the cooldown period is quicker - hence the faster flash.

Thanks, this is very useful info, I will have to check it out this evening.

Go to Canadian Tire & look for the ones that say " For European Cars ".
The will have a chrome-like socket, rather than a brass socket.
P.S. Your Hockey team blows.

Just replaced both lowbeams with Sylvania Silverstars. $20 each at Autozone. The light is much whiter and cleaner.

Many auto parts stores sell replacement lamps with "Sylvania" boldly shown on the front of the package; however, if you look at the back of the package you'll see Osram Sylvania ... the full name of the company. The wattage is critical when replacing lamps on a MB ... so the package doesn't necessarily have to state "European" if the wattage matches that listed in the Owner's Manual for a particular lamp.

Yesterday I checked the bulbs again and they are definitely OK. I turned on the emergency flasher and all four worked in synch no problem. I also placed out the bulb out of the socket so I can see what its doing and both filaments are fine. So the fast blinking must be caused elsewhere. Should I suspect a bad flasher? Where is teh flasher located in the 1987 260E ??

throne7, remove the turn signal lamps and inspect the base of each. I've encountered problems when the base develops a flat spot, as if someone has filed it at an angle. Replace any lamps with that appearance and see if that solves the problem. For example, on our 1995 E320 the 2 brake lamps were flat-spotted and caused the Exterior Lamp Failure light on the dash to illuminate even though both rear brake lamps would light when the brake pedal was pressed. Replacing both brake lamps solved the problem.

Hi Ferdman, I checked the base of the troublesome bulb as you suggested and you are right they are flat spotted. Looks as u described, like someone took the file and filed across the two connectors on the base. I will find some replacement bulbs and swap them.
