500E Fuel Problem

Last night I attempted to put some techron in the tank and upon opening the filler cap, gas exploded out at me. Probably a pint or more. Soaked me!

Car had been sitting for 2 weeks.

Other interesting points:
Last time I drove it, I smelled gas as I exited the vehicle in my driveway.

After changing my fuel soaked clothing, the car cranked a long time before it started.....like there was no fuel in the lines. Fuel pump was buzzing as normal.
I seem to recall it taking a while to start last week as well, but not as noticable as last night.

No puddles under the car today.

Any ideas? What would seemingly cause pressure in the tank and loss of pressure in a line to the engine?

Sounds like a purge system problem.. possibly a problem with the charcoal cannister system.

Indeed...I believe you can get a gas cap w/ a vent hole.@ least I've seen MB caps w/ small holes in them. You might also crawl under the car w/ a vent system diagram..make sure all your lines are clear/not pinched etc.

Next time back off the cap Very, Very slowly and hold it against the filler neck while the pressure slowly escapes.

Wow, that's weird. Was the tank topped off? Was the engine running when is sprayed you? On a side note, when I start my 500E you can here the return line spraying in the tank for about 30 seconds. Maybe there's a design flaw in the larger tank. My other 124's don't do that.
