97 E420 gas gauge doesnt go all the way up

it seems like even though i top off the tank, the gas needle doesnt quite reach the 1/1 mark, but sits below that. also when i fill up when the needle is almost at the bottom i can never fill more than 18 gal, telling me that the gas gauge isnt quite normal.
not a big deal b/c i can live with it, but is this a common problem? i'm guessing there is no easy fix.

welcome to owning a Mercedes. I replace fuel sending units almost daily on MB's to correct the inaccurate gauge readings...but get it checked before replacing the sending unit just to be sure.

my 90 560sel does the same thing. I got it to 1/1 filling it slowley with the engine on. don't recommend it. Ive checked the gage and it is fine. either the tank isn't loosing bubbles and the pump shuts off fom back pressure or the sender is off. Try filling it and wainting a few minutes: 2 or 3 like get acar wash. Then try topping it slowly. thats a whole lot cheaper that replacing the sender.

The part is about $160.00 from MB and is very easy to install.
