W202 722.6 Transmission Going into Limp Home Mode

I have a 99 C280, and its transmission seems to go into 'limp home' mode at random times, perhaps a couple of times per week. If I turn off the engine and restart, it ususally returns to normal. I have recently changed the transmission oil, but it has been happening prior to the fluid change.

A quick search on this forum revealed that it might be a 'sensor plate' that could cause this problem. Is this the correct diagnosis? How much does it cost to replace it at the dealer or a shop? Can this be a DIY? If so, what parts should I get, and what is the procedure?

Thank you in advance,
w202wraith

The first step in diagnosis is fault code retrieval of all modules. Post any stored codes.

The odd thing is that my mechanic told me that there are no stored codes. I'll borrow my friend's ODB-II scanner to see if there are any codes.

whenever I work on my C-classes to fix a computer or sensor issue. I always make sure my battery is 100%.
I also don't take any chances and install a new Mercedes battery every four years in my cars.

But I doubt limp home mode is activated by a weak battery on a 202.

OBDII will not pull the trans codes. You are going to need a dealer quality scanner for that.
