sway bar links, mysterious part, clicking brakes, etc...
hey everyone,
a few simple questions from a newby MB DIYer. I have an 82 300D. 1. I want to change out my rear stabalizing bar links cause Im hearing clunking back there when I am slowly moving. Where are these links located (pictures most helpfull, but any descriptions are appreciated...) 2. My right front brake is clicking loudly when I drive under 30 mph. At least I think its the brake because when I apply even a slight amount of pressure to the brake pedal it stops. Removed the wheel today to inspect brakes and found the anti rattle spring is missing... The sound isn't so much a rattle as a click, but couldn't get the sound to reproduce itself once the wheel was off... could it be that missing rattle spring? 3. Poking around I found an interesting little horn shaped attatchment hanging on what looked like a brake line. it was crusty and came off in my hand. It was attatched right at where the brake and fuel lines are attatched to the frame. What on earth is this thing and is it important? Thanks for any help. - Ben |

the clicking sounds like it may be bad cv joints. to check park the car where it wont roll, put it in neutral and grab the half shafts and push up and down. if there is any play they are bad. they will slide in and out from the diff normally a little.

Brakes?
If you think it's your brakes, but aren't sure, please, for the sake of the rest of us on the road, have them checked by a professional. NOW.

the half shafts are in the rear of the car. the power comes from the engint thru the transmisssion thru the driveshaft in the center of the car running from front to rear and into the differential. in the differential the speed is reduced by the ring and pinion gear and turned 90 degrees and sent toward each wheel. the half shafts are shafts that are about 1" in diameter running from the differential to each rear wheel. they will have a rubber boot at each end that expands to about 3" and covers the cv joints which allow the power to be transmitted flexibly while the rear wheels move up and down.
you might want to invest in a good repair manual. i recommend a haynes. good luck tom w
