00' SL500 dies, won't restart (crank) for several hours ...

My Sister's 2000 SL500 will start and run for awhile (maybe 10-15 miles), then suddenly dies and will not crank until it sits for several hours .
I have over 40 years experience with just about every Make and Model out there, except for MBZ. I am semi-retired and do not have a Scan Tool to access codes from the OBDII ... Any suggestions for troubleshooting this problem ... Starter Relay ?? ... Auto-Shutdown Relay ?? ...

no start

Hi I would not throw parts at this veh,a hit or miss will cost alot. You will need to find out if its an electrical problem or fuel related. When it stalls after hot,you say it will not crank over at all untill it sits for a few hours.Does it start right up then or turn over slow with a restart.Joeym

After sitting for an extended period (at least 6 hours), it will start right up and run very nicely ..... I have not taken it out on the road to try and duplicate the problem, since I do not want to have to tow it back home.

If it is the Crank Position Sensor, then why does the engine (starter) fail to crank the engine over. I turn the key to the start position and nothing happens. Battery is fully charged, all lights and accessories work properly, but Starter does not function (until I let it stand for several hours) .... then it cranks and starts just fine .... ???

What happens if you move the shifter to N instead of park?

Starter motor relay is at position "L" in right side fuse box.
When you remove a relay there is a letter beneath stamped on the connector.

I would try switching that relay with another with the same part number

Relay

Thanks a lot .... I will try that next .... What are your thoughts as to the sudden dying problem while driving .... The engine apparently just "shuts off" .... no sputtering, just quits. It has happened to my Sister a few times. She wants to sell the car and needs to have it in dependable condition prior to sale.

Crank position sensor is the most likely.

CPS Replacement

ALLDATA says I must "re-initiate" the Crankshaft Position Sensor with the MBZ Special Scan Tool after replacement .... Is that correct or can I just install the new CPS and the engine will (should) start and run as normal ... ??

I have the new CPS and want to get this thing back on the road ... HELP !!!!
