C280, 1995, reset check engine light??

Hey, for the past week I have not been able to use the search function !!! I get the 'wait 20 secs, 5 secs and then a blank page.

So, can anybody tell me if I can reset the check engine light by, say, disconnecting the battery cables, or some other methos without the hand held digital device??

Don't know if this model year had the tougher emissions control software....

It was probabley activated by the engine temp sensor as I drove to the mechanic to have water pump replaced.
Did not overheat.

Thanks

Have you tried the 10 minute battery disconnect? You may have to reset your windows, radio code and sunroof.

Have not disconnected battery yet.

As far as I know, only the radio needs to be coded in afterward.....????

I dont see whay the battery method wouldnt work, I did it once on a C220 in a pinch and it worked. yes, have to resynce windows and recode radio afterwards.

Johnhef, thanks for the info, however, what year was your C220??
1995??

Maybe the battery disconnect works up to 1994. That is what I am trying to find out.

I've never had to deal with 'resyncing' the windows after a battery disconnect.

How does that work?

Other opinions appreciated as well.

For the archives

Disconnecting the battery did reset the CEL.

In my car there was no ned to resynch the windows. Just recode the radio and reset the clock.

You may have to drive the car for at least 100 miles for the system to reset itself. At least thats what I had to do in my 98 C230. This prevents you from disconnecting the battery to get rid of the CEL and pass an emission inspection. The system won't be ready ubtil you drive it for a while.

John, thanks for the insight.

It may be due to the newer emissions software. That is why I was not sure whether the trick would work with the 1995 model.

So, even though the light is off the dash, you are probably correct that the info is stored for 100 miles for emissions concerns.

I'm pretty sure that you have one of the few 1995 model year cars that had OBDII. Look for ALCL connector under the dash and if there is one, they can draw and reset codes for free at Auto Zone and many other auto supply chain stores.

Check it out.

Good luck,

Often times, I call the dealer and ask such questions. The worst that could happen is they'll say you have to bring it in for them to do it.

So far, I've had good luck getting info from dealer especially with older MBs. Thats probably because I established rapor with the service mgr.

As the say, you reap what you saw.

I dont think the 95's had the 16pin connector under the dash, only the 32pin round one under the hood for diag info.

Thanks Larry and Toby.

For now the light was reset and I'll drive it 100 miles to make sure it 1. )does not come back on, 2.) resets completely.

Later I'll look under the dash or try to establish whether it has the OBDII
E.C.

Aside,

Larry , Good to see ya posting ! Best regards, hope all is well.

I forgot to mention that my CEL stays on and its because of the secondary air delivery. I think the sec air pump is bad but it really has not affected performance so i have not messed with it.

I scanned it thats why I know the above.

Maybe I'll take down the pump this summer and see if I can get it going.
