What's this?

Can anyone tell me what is what I can only describe as a large electrical plug of some sort in the engine bay in front of the winshield in my 1986 420sel?

It's the diagnostic port, though you have to use a dedicated tool. Sort of like a OBD II plug on a modern car. Handy for checking duty cycle when adjusting the fuel mixture.

if it is in front of the windshield he is likely talking about the pin connector for retreiving system codes, is it near the battery and has a little red led?

What's this

86 420SEL didn't have diagnostic port on the firewall that started in 88.
A photo or more accurate info would help (pass. side? center? drivers side? How many pins?
Who knows? maybe the Klima relay is missing and he's seeing an empty socket.
