You were in limp mode or something like that. Do a search, I've seen it covered here many times.

I have experienced this several times over the last 4 years. Turn the car off
and restart this has worked for me 6-8 times. It has not done this for over a year. Once the car would not start in the morning so I towed it to a shop. It worked perfectly at the shop. If it does this again I would disconnect the battery and try starting again. The cause is likly one of three or four decaying
electonic parts or engine wireing harness. My experience from searching this web site that it is difficult to determine the exact cause for your vehicle
without analizing the fault codes. The parts to repair vary from a few hundred up to $500. I have been lucky with not fixing anything but your situation may be different. People have gone to the dealer and spent a lot of money on repaires, some of them got their cars fixed, some did not. Many have done the work themselves with better results.

engine harness issues

these cars are notorious for having engine harness issues.... probably time to replace the harness. how do the wires look?

Engine wiring harness is a pure guess and not a very good one at that. You need to get the fault codes read, or learn to read them yourself. ASR is a nuisance and you have very likely not seen the last of the ASR light. Learning how to read the fault codes is a wise investment.

You are right. It was a guess. And since none of us are in the same location as the car, that is all you can do as well. For your information I had the same exact problem, and yes it was a 92 400e, and yes replacing the engine harness fixed the issue.
