123 gas tank interchange?

I have a 1978 280CE. It sat for almost 10 years in a garage before I bought it. The reason it sat, was it ate the passenger side cam. The reason it was kept so long is it is ultra clean. We put a new good used head on it. The gas tank has a shocking amount of rust in it. If this was a one of a kind gas tank I would go the hot rod route and restore the tank.
But we are blessed with fantastic salvage yards in North Texas. But most of the 123 tanks are diesels. Could a diesel tank work, or do I need to wait for a good 123 gasser tank?
