124 windsheild wiper motor / arm problems

Hope some body has some experience with this. I have a 1990 300ce. Last monday while driving in the snow, the front wiper arm became herky / jerky. Started stuttering and then finally stopped, blown fuse. Replaced fuse and was good for another jerky sweep or two and then blew fuse. Went through 6 fuses to get another 5-6 miles then another two hours with out a wiper in a snow storm. Is it the motor or the wiper arm transmission. Where do I find a diagram on removing and replacing this assembly and possible a reman. or good used working part. I am afraid to ask the dealership how much for both new pieces. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!

It's 17 years old and may be out of grease. The cold weather exacerbates the problem.
Motor straining to move the mechanism causes blown fuses.

If you do a search on this forum, you should find several detailed R&R descriptions with pictures.

I remember one guy talking about shooting motor cycle chain lubricant up into the clamshell.

Get the wiper arm to stop in the middle of the window. Now remove the plastic cover by pulling out. Move arm so its at top of arc and wipe the metal slide off. Then apply several drops of automatic transmission fluid and work the arm back and forth. Finally, put several more drops on the arm, reattach the plastic cover and off you go. If you dont keep the arm lubed this way, you will be spending $1200 for a new mechanism.

Thanks for the reply. The pics and tutorial should help. I'll let you know on the results after I tear into it. I hope that is all that is needed and the transmission is still in good shape. Look for an update if I survive this!

The same thing happened to me (minus the blown fuses). I was able to pop the top cover of the arm off and put some grease on it as a temp fix until I could do the job correctly. It worked like a charm.

bad wiper motor

Just finished taking apart the whole wiper assembly. Looked at each individual part, starting with the transmission. Cleaned, lube'd ect..
Went to check the motor, seperately. Grinds and blows fuses. Took apart the gear head that is driven by the motor, gear appears to fit good, although a slight circular depression exists all the way around the round plastic gear. When installed back into the housing where it interfaces with the worm gear on the motor, there is not slop and no apparent clearance issues. Appears that the motor has issues, but cannot be seperated from the aluminum gear housing. Can this part be found seperatly, used? Any experience with this part? Any help or direction for a cheap parts source would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Happy ending?

After having the motor checked out, it was junk parts! It appears that the sleeve/ bearing on the end of the armature broke and the pieces were binding in between the magnets and the armature assembly, hence the jerky motion until the motor smoked itself. Re-assembled and the unit with the new oem bosch unit and it works like a charm. Please take the advise of another person on this post and put a towel down unless you have a flexible magnet, as I dropped the nut off the motor shaft and it found the lowest possible point under the blower motor assembly.
Also take the advice of making a mark on top of the motor shaft and the adjacent arm assembly, as it took me about four tries to get the blade adjusted, thats when I dropped the nut, as I had the motor and blade assembly parked and not in the center. Figured I had to do this as I was starting with a new motor.

On another note, which I will start a new thread, I have found a fix for an intermittent short where by the ABS light comes on and the check engine light goes on alternating back and forth. When the ABS light comes on the engine runs real rough and does not idle very well. This is problematic with this era and milage of a 124 model. My mercedes mechanic friend told me the fix and it seems to work. Once I have permanently done the fix and confirmed the results I will post it. Very cool and very simple!
