On the 1996 SL600, there coded authentication system that you are referring to is the alarm. The only security measure thats in place in terms of preventing you from starting the car is the laser cut key. If you remove the alarm brain while its disarmed, you still should be able to start the car.
I unplugged that brain for the alarm on the 1996 SL we have, and all ran fine when it was unplugged. The ignition switch just uses a laser cut key to allow you to start it. The key emits no RF frequencies or IR frequencies when you start the car. Did you get my PM?
