W124 Engine number stamped on the engine somewhere?

What is a reliable way to determine the engine number in your car? I have a 1987 260E but it has the original engine replaced with a used one so I can't go by the VIN to get the engine number. Is there a way I can read it off the engine block somewhere? It should be stamped somewhere right? For all I know it might not even be a 2.6L liter in there, could be a 3.0L as the two are almost the same size. Thx

124 Engine number

Hi,
I have a '87 300E. The engine number is stamped into a flat place on the block on the passenger side. It is towards the front of the engine and low down. You might need to clean the engine to see it.
