Need help with fan clutch

I am so glad I found this forum. I hope spmepne can help. I have a 1990 190E 2.6. The engine was making weird noises. Upon inspection, I found the fan clutch assembly is loose and wobbles. I removed the shroud and the belt but I can't figure out how to remove the fan clutch assembly. Also, can any of you tell me what my issue is here and what I should be replacing? Thanks.

the fan is mounted to the bearing bracket which mounts to the front timing cover.you have some work ahead of you in a very cramped space which will require special tools.

Thanks David. I appreciate it. Can you elaborate a little as far as special tools I will need and/or where I can go online to get a guide. I'd bring it to you but Dallas is to far from Charlotte.

How did you get the belt off without removing the fan clutch?

To get the fan clutch off you need about a 1/4" dia rod, bent at a 90 degree angle for the last 1/2" of it or so. This goes in behind the fan clutch pulley, engages into a groove cast into the fan bearing bracket, then into a hole in the pulley flange. This keeps the fan pulley + fan clutch from rotating when you take an 8mm allen wrench (or short socket) to the bolt holding the fan clutch on the front side. Then the fan clutch will come off.

I suspect your problem is not with the fan clutch, but instead with a worn fan bearing. You might be able to get the bearing replaced, or you might have to shell out for the whole fan bearing bracket.

Mercedes makes two "special" tools for removing the fan clutch - one is a rod bent at the right angles, one is a very short 8mm 3/8" allen-head socket.

Thanks for the info Anthony. I got the belt off by loosening the belt tensioner. Wasn't too difficult. You are correct thought, it's the bearing. I just ordered a new bracket. Seems just as easy and probably much faster. I appreciate the specific info. It should make the job a tad easier.
