Ignition Tumbler removed, but that ain't the problem !

1992 400E - 217,000 miles - Ignition key would no longer turn; tried all the tricks (lubricant, vibration, etc.). Ordered new tumbler from dealer and had car towed to a locksmith. He has removed the old tumbler and now tells me that the tumbler is not my problem - there is some piece related to the steering wheel/column that is keeping the tumbler from turning. He has not put the new tumbler in, as he says it will exhibit the same problems as before. He does not perform any work past the tumbler and has called me to come get the car.

Any ideas as to the wheel/column issue? I'm a DIY'er most of the time, I'm already into this job for around $250 and I need to try and fix this myself if possible.

Thanks in Advance,
Ray

I know it's a 190 but see if this thread has any useful information.

David,

Replacing the steering lock assembly does not sound like a trivial job, based on the above thread from slk230red. Am I correct in assuming steering wheel, instrument cluster and all entailing trim and connectors must be removed to get to the lock assembly?

Anybody know how much the lock assembly costs new? I already have the new tumbler. Would you try and get a lock assembly from a dismantler or is this just asking for more trouble?

Ray

David,

Based on your signature, I assume you've done this job before.

What can I expect a shop (both dealer and Indy) to charge for this - just looking for an estimate.
