Transmission troubles

I have a '97 W210 E Class, started taking off erratically from a standing start in first and second, other gears were smooth. Happened for a few times when taking off from the lights. Shortly after it went into "limp home mode" and there it stayed. Only now has the one forward gear.
Any ideas??? Will have it checked out after the weekend, but needed some idea to avoid being ripped off!

well i recognised your handle as aussie when i saw it.lived in cremorne back in 1975.your problem should be the shift lever switch pack [sometimes called recognition switch].it probably suffered from an unneeded drink of coke or coffee several months ago.will need to be replaced and codes erased.
