Stalling probs with 92 300E
Hello everyone, I'm new here and was just referred by a friend from an MG forum I belong to. I have a 92 300E that I have owned for almost a year now, and really enjoy it as a work car and local runabout. Recently I've begun to have stalling problems. As I'm driving in town, occasionally on the freeway but usually in regular traffic the car has intermittently stalled out. As I'm doing, oh say 45, the car will just die. The tach will continue to read out correctly, but if I give it gas, nothing. I can put it into Neutral, turn the key off and back on, and it usually restarts with no problem. Drive on to work, or back home and all is well. On one rather warm day it occurred maybe 5 or 6 times in the last mile home. I let it sit for 2 or 3 days, and when I drove it again, it had no probs for 4 days, then stalled out once.
My friend who posts here suggested that it may be the fuel pump relay. Occasionally I can smell gasoline in the interior (not always) and he said there may be a loose fitting at the pump. I'm not very familiar with the workings of these cars, my expertise is in the 60's and 70's British Iron, but I'm fairly mechanical and could use any help/suggestions you folks may have to offer. Thanks in advance Rufus |

I just posted an almost exact problem before I saw your post. I am very interested in this, also! Hopefully, between the two posts, we can get this solved!!

I'm not sure anyone here is interested in helping a newbie, or I'm just a bit vague on the symptoms. Maybe its because I mentioned my MG.
I was just hoping that someone with some experience with these older 300E's had run into the same problem. I'm not really excited about throwing hundred dollar bills at it to replace parts that may or may not have any effect on the problem. Mine feels like fuel pump related dying, but I'm not familiar enough with the injection system to diagnose it. We can only wait, and rely on the generosity of strangers Rufus |

I'll throw in some random ideas as a starter: Fuel pump relay seems like a good guess to me, however your model year has a so called MAS unit that integrates the fuel pump relay, with, I believe, the KLIMA relay. It is much more pricey, but can be have used at a good price. However it does not seem to fail as often as the fuel pump relay. When the car does not stall, does it run ok? How is the fuel consumption? Have you checked secondary ignition (especially distributor and rotor!)? You can also measure duty cycle to get an idea about the mixture adjustment electronic (http://www.landiss.com/mixture.htm). There are two fuel pumps in tandem on the car - you could measure voltage and current. Also, how old is the fuel filter? Good luck, Bruno

Sometimes people are two busy to respond to these kinds of questions. Especially if you post in the middle of the week, you kow work and all of that. During the weekends the number of posts, with helpful answers, usually goes up. Regarding your specific problem do you know whther yoru engine is the M103 or the M104. It makes a difference because, for example, many M103 engines experienced a stalling, or cutting out, condition. I have a 1989 300TE with the M103 engine and it developed a stalling condition. After much research, my mechanic hit upon a solution. He replaced the Hall Effect Sensor and voila, no more stalling. That, however, may not be your problem. So this is what I suggest: Use the search feature of this forum and type in a few kewy words like "w124" + "stalling" or "300e" + "stalling" and you will get a large number of "hits." Review the threads and see if the problems described in those other threads match your problem. Maybe their solutions will help. If you type, for example, "300te" + "stalling" you will run into the threads that I started regarding my own experiences. Check it out and see if the info helps you. if not, come back and ask more questions, someone will help you figure it out. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies guys. It will be Sunday before I have another chance to look into this situation.
Quick answers. When its running, it runs great! No problems, fuel mileage seems to be around 20 in town as I haven't been on a freeway or hiway in months. It is a random stall, and only once has it failed to start right back up, and then it was only a minute of switching the key back off and on before it started back up and ran fine. Thanks for the help, and please post. Rufus |
