Steering wheel removal

Can anyone tell me how to remove the steering wheel from a '76 450SL. I just replaced the steering coupler and, unfortunately, misaligned the wheel. Rather than redo the coupler, I'm hoping I can remove and re-center the wheel.

thanx

Pull off the big black pad in the center of the wheel by grabbing the upper edge and pulling out towards you and down. Same for the bottom edge, but pull up. Under that is a large nut inside about a 4" deep hole. I think the nut is 22mm or so. Remove that and the wheel will just slide off. I can't remember if the wheel will only go back in one direction. Sometimes one of the splines is not cut out and the wheel will only line up one way. With the nut loose you can drive the car and reposition the wheel as needed if the splines will let you.

Redo the steering coupler,,, If you move the position of the steering wheel the blinkers will be messed up.

steering wheel

recently removed my steering wheel on my 1980 450sl.The post about the rubber center pad is correct.Under my pad I had to undo the horn plate and the bolt was a hex allen bolt and it was tight tight tight (mercedes thread locker). The spline allows any angle replacement.
