possible free W201

I have a neighbor across the street who has to get rid of a W201 1988 190e with 87,000 miles on the odometer. I really don't know too much about them, I have had a few of the older cars (w119, w115, w126), but none of the real "modern" cars. He needs to get rid of it due to his landlord getting sick of looking at it. It is sitting on 2 flat tires (front) has a broken front windshield, drivers side rear quarter window and has a cracked front bumper cover. The body is mostly rust free, and paint is not that bad. I think that is the bad stuff. I have spoken to the landlord who will get me the title. I figure I will give the owner a hundred or so dollars. I have no idea if it will even start.
So what should I look for besides the obvious motor starting. I don't think I will be able to test the transmission. I want to use it on weekends, as I have a Miata that I commute in and will use it in the winter. Are there any "trouble" issues that would make a project unreasonable. I figure the transmission is going to be the main thing.

Sounds like you need to jump on that..

Drain the fuel tank BEFORE you do anything....add a couple of gals of fresh preminum gas..hope for the best...put it on a couple of blocks(tires off the ground) & see if the transmission will work...good luck.

How hard are these transmissions to rebuild. I have rebuilt motors before, and replaced clutches before. But have never taken a Auto transmission apart since a 1968 Hydroglyde 2 speed, and that was just to adjust. The W201 is still all mechanical correct? I think I read once that the valve bodies in the Mercedes transmissions are not to hard to get in and out.

For the time and money it will take, I'd be tempted to find a good used or already rebuilt trans. Some things just aren't worth the aggravation.

If you're retired, go ahead. I predict it will consume your life for the near future. You will be able to apply much of your existing knowledge, though. It's not that advanced.

LOL

No I am not retired! I need something to drive fairly soon but I do have my Miata on the road now but it is a pain making 2 trips to get my kids places! Since I can only carry one at a time.
