small drain next to gas tank filler

on my w210, E430 00, there's a small drain hole right next to the gas cap area. Is that for extra gas that might spill or does that serve any purpose in the water drainage for the pillars as well ?
thnx in advance.

Whatever liquid gets in there will drain via this hole.

Ours fills up a bit when washing the car.

during the heavy rains about a month or so ago, I had the battery area flooded with water and upon inspection of every single drain hole, this drain was the only one i saw that was stuck with debris. I'm curious if during rain, this serves as the drainage to any other areas, and if it doesnt drain properly , if there's any way that the pillars might start to accumulate water leading to leaking in the trunk and eventually into the battery area where the excess truck water leads into...

Nah ;

It's just for overflow of fuel ~ the hose clogs quite often , just take the tire air hose in the gas station and blow into it a little bit and the crud (leaf mulch usually) will blow out the bottom of it....
