Merc trans 722 series is it from Torqueflite 727

I talked to a tranny tech once and on the subject of Merc tranny.
Our old ones goes by 722 as in most 123 diesel , 116 and 126.

So is it a distant cousin of the 727?

There're only handful of tranny makers, IE Turbohydramatic by GM, they even powered the RR it got to be reliable.
Torqueflite by Chrysler.

Ford's whatever they name them.

Allison is it owned by GM too for their big trucks.

Europe has ZF, Borg Warner.

Any input will be appreciated.
