Cabriolet Top problem

I hit a wicked bump earlier this evening and suddenly the "roll-over" bar (two rear seat backs) popped up on my 1994 e-320 Cabriolet. I wouldn't mind, but the top was down -- and now I can neither get the roll-over bar seatbacks to retract into their holes, nor get the top mechanism to operate and put the top up. It hasn't rained in 3 weeks here, but I can't count on top-down driving forever!

I checked fuses and saw nothing amiss. When I hit the top up/down button, things click and whir but nothing happens. Also, when I hit the button to retract the seatback roll-over bars, nothing happens.

Any advice out there? Please? It's supposed to rain tomorrow ....

Thanks!

TLR

First try holding the roll-bar switch in the UP position for 20-30 seconds to see if the hydraulic ram will lock back onto the roll-bar.

God bless ya, it woiked!

WOW, your solution worked like a charm and I sure do appreciate it!

Thank goodness for this forum and your sage advice!

I had found similar queries to mine on the internet, and various solutions included locking the doors for an hour or disconnecting the battery. Tried both, no luck. So I wasn't expecting much when I read your reply, but you were right. Held the button "up" for about 20 seconds and suddenly heard a different 'click' and, BINGO, everything is fine now. Top goes up, seatbacks are down, and it hasn't even rained yet!

So, while I have you -- dare I ask about two more problems I've endured a long time on my 1994 e-320 W124?

1. Passenger-side seat belt system: If I leave the belt unlocked, the assist arm keeps moving in and out. Sometimes it will be quiet for several days, but eventually it starts acting up again, in-out, in-out. (Or as my wiseacre son says, "Sieg Heil, Sieg Heil!") The only way to curtail this annoyance is to keep the belt locked in place, as if a passenger was belted in. In fact, if I use the belt from the back seat to click in the front, it stops, too. I assume there's a sensor or relay that needs replacing -- but where is it located?

2. No High Speed Wiper: My wipers work OK except on High Speed. Intermittent works fine, as does Normal. But when I click up to High speed, it remains at Normal speed. It's been doing this since I bought the car at 35 MM (now has 108 MM on it). I replaced the Combo switch two years ago; no change. Two weeks ago, I had the windshield replaced (a wild turkey smashed into me at 75 mph!) and had the wiring checked at that time; no problem seen but still no High speed. Any suggestions?

Once again, I thank you for your prompt and wise reply re the rollover mechanism reset!

Tim

Glad not to have your problem, here in North Texas it has been raining cats and dogs all June long.

M.B. Doc is superb!

The wiper speeds are built into the motor. sounds like the wiper switch isn't sending that signal to the motor.

The seat belt handler has a torque limiter in the mechanism..most likely bad.
To repair you must replace the completer handler.

I too am having problems identical problems with my passenger side seat belt presenter. Can you point out which parts need to be replaced in the diagram above?
