Harsh Transmission Upshift Between 3-4 on C230 '97

Model C230
Year 1997
Mileage 175K
Transmission Type: Automatic - Original Transmission.
Location: Sacramento, California

Did I search this site? Yes but nothing specific to C230 was found by me on transmission

Problem With Car: I feel a harsh upshift at low speed. Sometimes it makes the car jump like "bump" when changing gear from 3 to 4. It is happening more frequently now. The car revs just before it makes the harsh upshift or "bump".
I took the car to the dealership and here is what the wrote on my statement of work after running a short test.

"Check Adaptation Codes. Trans Adaptations at Max 3-4 and 4-5 At 150 J3 Fill Rate Is 15 Trans Worn Out"
"Check Trans for Harsh Upshift. Found Adaptations at Max. No codes stored and fluid level is good"
"Reccomend Trans"
"New Trans $6200"

My options are to buy a new one and pay the above price which is more than what the car is worth or get a rebuilt or get someone to open up the transmission and work on it.

Question: What is my most viable option? Or do I have other options I am not aware of? Does anyone know where I can take it to in Sacramento California?
Thanks folks!!

722.6 Transmission

Ikpa,

This sounds similar to what I've been dealing with on my '97 C230 with the same transmission, but only 88,200 miles on it. See my thread here: '97 C230, CEL Code P1747: Urgent?

At present, my car is behaving just fine without a $1500 controller repair . . . but even if that turned out to be your problem, it's better than $6200. How often does the problem recur?

Find an independent mechanic who is qualified to rebuild these transmissions -- the Good Shops forum may have some listed for Sacramento. Good luck!
