300e electrical problem

i have a 1991 300e 3.0 engine. i had a problem with the alternator, so i had it rebuilt, it was working fine till i went on the highway today, and i had the a/c on and stuff. then suddenly an hour into the drive, the abs light and srs light come on, then the radio and blower motor come on, then things start shutting off, then the car start slowing down and cutting off while i try to give it more gas, then suddenly it goes back to normal.
it never fully turned off.
but i did notice that when the lights start coming on, if i put it in nuetral, i get all poower back and car goes fine for a few kms.
it seems to me that something is lose, b/c this only happened on the highway, not in the city when i got back. and it could happen 10 times in a row, or go away for 45 mins. which is wierd.
possibly the wind moving something that makes it lose power, im not sure.
any ideas?
considering irebuilt the alternator and the voltage regulator has new brushes.
thanks

I would check OVP & its fuse, as well as generally ALL the fuses in the fusebox. The ceramic-body fuses eventually develop stress failure micro-cracks in the fuse elements. They may appear normal, but if you remove the fuse, a bad one will separate. If you find one like this, replace them all.

but would that cause the car to do that? b/c when they start coming on, everything turns off, even the car will be about to turn off, then it kicks back in in like a blink second.
i noticed that when it happens and i put it in nuetral, it gets all the power back.
whats the ovp relay do?

You mention a recent alternator rebuild. I hope the rebuilder replaced the voltage regulator while this was going on. Easy enough to check.

Elevate front of car enough to allow you to slide in from the bottom. Alternator on passenger side. Remove 2 phillips screws from the back of the alternator and pull out the voltage regulator. It has 2 brushes on it. Brand new, they are 1/2 inch long.

I've been thru the same thing and in my case, the VR brushes were badly worn down.

i know the guy when he rebuilt it, he didnt put a new voltae regulator, he just changed the brushes on it. i took it out after he rebuilt it and checked it, there was new brushes on it.
but before the rebuild, one brush was worn all the way, while the second one was still new.
hope that helps
thanks

If it were my ride, I'd ditch the "rebuilt" brushes and buy some new ones. Are you 110% sure BOTH of them are fumctioning as intended?
