Squeeking and Squeeling from Engine
Hello, everyone. I haven't posted lately because the 560SEL has been in the garage, collecting dust, due to the ac problems and the weather. I sure have missed her, and yesterday I decided to crank her up to make sure everything was ok. Haven't driven her in about 2 weeks. Checked all fluids, everything is ok. Cranked her up, and I hear a squeeling noise. Off and On. I run her for about 15 minutes, and she is still doing it. Sound seems to be coming from the front of the engine. Have any Ideas, Folks? Also, how hard is it to replace the AC compressor on one of these cars? Is it a possible DIY?
Thanks, Dave.

Check the belt tension first
I would check the tension on all the drive belts and replace them if they look worn. I had a similar squealing sound and it turned out to be one of the two alternator/water pump belts. I replaced them through Fastlane...
Just make sure that you loosen all three bolts on the alternator and A/C compressor before trying to tighten the tension nut. I did not realize there were three bolts on my compressor and broke the tensioner bolt Lucky I have a spare engine...

The compressor is easy to replace on these cars. But it takes some knowledge about A/C systems to do all the other stuff related to replacing major components of the system. Why do you want to replace it?

Well, I need to R&R the AC compressor because the clutch has locked up, and I have no cold air whatsoever coming out of my vents. Being an 86 it has the somewhat more expensive Denso compressor than the earlier A-6, and that made me wonder just how much more work, if any was involved? Also, I have read of different filters and/or switches that need to be added if one is to replace the AC compressor, in addition to the standard replacement of the Accumulator and the orifice tube. One shop that gave me an astronomical quote said they refused to tackle the job without being authorized to replace the compressor, accumulator, orifice tube, both AC lines, evaporator core, and the condenser. It should be noted, however, that this shop had never even seen the car. They just stated that over the phone. When I asked why I should replace all of these parts, even if there is nothing wrong with them, they just said that it is their policy to do so.
I have heard of major problems with the aux. fan, so what should I expect out of it. I do know that I have never seen it work. Thanks, Dave.

dave that is an easier replacement than the a-6.your belt squeel will be the alternator belt[s].p.s. there is no accumulator or orifice tube---just an expansion valve and drier---shows how much the people you called listened to what you said, prob some kid filling in for the summer.
