I went to the shop today to talk to the mechanic and take a look at the transmission. He found 2 brake bands bad and almost all friction disc burned. He told me we are going to need a Master Rebuild Kit, both brake bands, oil and filter. That's a $2000 repair.

If true that would seem to call into doubt whether this is a 50k mile car. If so it was an hellacious 50k miles.

It is a 50k miles car, but I'm the third owner. That's why I feel so sad and disaponited. I would expect this in a 200k car, but not in this one....

Look on the bright side - the car may actually have 200k miles on it, in which case you've not had premature problems. It certainly sounds like a 200k mile transmission.

No. The car is in fact 50k miles. I'm the third owner but I know the previous two. I know this car since new. It belonged to my mother's boss, then to my mother and now to me. I think it has something to do with my mother's boss driving style because his wife had a Mazda with premature transmission problems too. And I also think that maybe this transmission had it's first oil and filter change at 43k miles when I bought it (after 11 years). Or maybe it's just some quality problem in this car. This is a 722.5 transmission and the same car in USA has the 722.3 transmission. Maybe that makes some diferrence. I just don't know.....

I got some discount on the repair. It's going to cost $1800.

The mechanic also told me that after fixing the transmission I need to make the first oil and filter change after 2k miles. Is it ok?

722,5 transmission usually go bad on the reverse perhaps they have driving with oil level to low and was stuck with the car and spinning a lot you can ruin a automatic transmission really fast.

Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that I got the transmission fixed since last saturday. It is running very good and shift really smooth. Reverse is working perfectly. Other thing I noticed is that the car has more power when starting from stop. I guess I also had 1 and 2 sliping.

After picking up the car, I decided to read faulty codes and I'm getting code 5 on pin 13. I don't know what it means and the code can't be deleted. Any imputs will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Reverse; slipping, whistling, late engagement

I came across this thread again and wanted to provide a link to this solution for 722.3/.4 reverse "failure".

Pin 13 is electronic transmission control, code 5 is "CAN data line from DI control module (N1/3) or HFM control module signal distorted." Found here: sbryantgb.com/w124uk/pdf/fcm/r170_fehlercodes.pdf

I didn't think the electronic 5-speed auto was ever offered on a W124, I'd definitely hold on to that.

i have the same car with already 300 000 miles. It drives still very good. I think you have some minor problems with your transmission. Sad that you could not ship it to Bulgaria to get it repaired for reasonable price. I hope that you have fixed it and dont sell your nice car.
