124 Steering Coupler Replacement and Steering Box Adjustment

Has anyone tried replacing the steering coupler and/or adjusting the steering free play in a 124?

I've a new coupler a couple of months now and I'm just wondering about the level of difficulty. Could this part really be worn enough to cause a noticeable looseness after 10 years?

I've also looked at the steering box and it looks almost impossible to adjust free play without removing it due to the difficulty of getting to the adjustment on top.

I'd appreciate any thoughts and the procedures if someone has them.

I have adjusted the steering gear on my 190 E 2.6 and it took a little bit of ingenuity. You must find what combination of tools will do the job. I had to crack the lock nut open with 18 inches of extensions then adjusted the steering gear and tightened the locknut with a closed end wrench. See what works for you. You may have to but a sidewinder or universal joint. Adjustment should be possible.

Thanks for the input JDUB, but come on Brothers! Surely someone has replaced a steering coupler or adjusted steering wheel free play on a 300E! Are y'all going to leave me hangin'?

Well I replaced the steering coupler AND adjusted out excess play in the steering box this weekend. Found no wear on the coupler at all -- I only wish that I new if the previous owner had changed it already. I think it's original but.....

Anyway, you have to remove two allen bolts on the coupler and the three mounting bolts for the steering box. If you try this, make sure that you mark the splines on the steering box shaft in a way that allows you to put the new couple back EXACTLY like the old one came off. You can also center your steering wheel if you have the time to play with it. Steering is noticeably tighter now. Worth the effort but it was tedious.
