w123 steering box replacement
Hi,
Can anyone give me hints/tips/advice/instruction on how to remove the steering box in a w123 83 300D turbo? I am mostly concerned with how to get off the pitman arm and steering coupling without loosing the wheel centering or breaking the corregated steering shaft. I am also curious about setting the center screw (described as #60 in the manual) correctly. Is this a 2 person job? It seems that someone would need to hold stuff in place, as the box cant just rest on the pitman arm or coupling, and everything needs to be held inplace. Does the pitman arm go in only one way, or can it be put on in any direction because all the splines are identical? Thanks very much for any help you can give. JMH

I left the arm attached to the steering box and removed both, then used an impact wrench on the bench.
There are a few threads/links about making a new center screw, if you're talking about the bolt that locks the steering gear in place. |
